Atrial fibrillation is the most dangerous risk factor for stroke. In Germany 40.000 patients per year have a stroke caused by atrial fibrillation. In epidemiological studies, 1/3 of the patients with atrial fibrillation were not diagnosed before. In ¼ of the strokes caused by atrial fibrillation it was only diagnosed after the stroke.
There is a therapy to reduce the risk for stroke significantly, an efficient blood anticoagulation. But for that, atrial fibrillation must be diagnosed. But first atrial fibrillation must be diagnosed in time.
30% of the patients experience in the beginning the so called paroxysmal atrial fibrillation with mostly asymptomatic fibrillation episodes. Hence, to detect atrial fibrillation, especially paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, is the challenge.
